Water routes around Suursaari

WATER NATURE TRAIL

The Suursaari water nature trail takes you around small islands and along shores. You can explore the 4-km trail by rowing boat or canoe. Eight information boards in four languages explain the nature, fauna, flora and history of North Karelia. The trail is suitable even for beginners and families. It is, however, advisable to try your rowing or paddling skills in shallow water before you start off. On route, you can spot various lakeland birds, such as the black-throated diver, osprey and marsh harrier. From the most remote information board, you can go ashore and explore the Apajalahti nature trail, a 2.8-kilometre circular path that takes you through a private nature reserve. Please keep a safe distance to rocks where birds are nesting.

WATER ORIENTEERING TRAIL

The Suursaari orienteering trail is 20 kilometres long, with 9  targets, and can be done by rowing boat or canoe. You can take a day or even two to explore the waters of northern Saimaa lake district, on the border of two cultures. If you are lucky, you may spot a ringed seal. The islands invite you to stop for a bite or drink, lure fish or try geocaching. If you prefer to do it a two-day tour, you can camp in an open shed.

The round trip starts and ends in Suursaari.  The tour can be done independently or with a guide. If it is windy, rowing or canoeing on an open strech of the lake requires experience. The tour can be shortened to suit less experienced rowers and paddlers.
